What is Content Management?
Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is comprised of all the technology and procedures surrounding the authoring, storage, lookup, editing, publication, governance, and other administrative actions one might do against the articles/documents/data behind the Intranet. The system that Vignette provides for this is the Vignette Content Management System (CMS). The CMS is the "author and editor" environment.
Web Content Management is the above definition applied to Web Properties. Most systems that claim Web Content Management support have Managed Data and delivery mechinisms that interface with a web front end or presentation layer (like Vignette's Portal products).
What is Portal?
Portal technology is how the content in the CMS is delivered to the end-user, secured and personalized, and the framework for interaction between content and web based applications (Portlets). The Portal is the web based end-user environment.
